Dr. Thomas Spencer, a former student of the department, was recently elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Election to membership in the NAS is considered one of the highest honors a U.S. scientist can receive.
The NAS is a private, non-profit society of distinguished scholars. Established by an Act of Congress, signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, the NAS is charged with providing independent, objective advice to the nation on matters related to science and technology. Scientists are elected by their peers to membership in the NAS for outstanding contributions to research. The NAS is committed to furthering science in America, and its members are active contributors to the international scientific community. (http://www.nasonline.org/)
Spencer earned his Ph.D. in Physiology of Reproduction from the Department of Animal Science in 1995 under the direction of Dr. Fuller Bazer. He conducted postdoctoral research at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston from 1995-1997. In 1998, he returned to the department as a research assistant professor and then rose to the rank of full professor.
He credits much of the research he conducted while a faculty member in the department for this accolade.
“The Department of Animal Science was particularly supportive for that research, and I owe a big thanks to Fuller Bazer, Gary Williams, and Guoyao Wu (Animal Sciences) and Greg Johnson and Bob Burghardt (Veterinary Medicine) for all that they did for my career” said Spencer. “In fact, I maintain a very productive research collaboration with Ky Pohler in Animal Sciences, who is an excellent young scientist.”
