Kathrin Dunlap celebrated for creating meaningful learning experiences

The Center for Teaching Excellence at Texas A&M University has named Kathrin Dunlap, Ph.D., instructional associate professor and associate head for academic programs in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Department of Animal Science, and nine other faculty members across Texas A&M as inaugural recipients of the Provost Academic Professional Track Teaching Excellence Award.

The Center for Teaching Excellence created this new award in an effort to encourage, recognize and reward faculty for exceptional teaching practices that create meaningful learning experiences for students. Recipients of this award have demonstrated impact of an effective teaching approach and the value of student-centered learning.

“This award really represents the willingness of my students to engage with course material and to expand their perspective,” said Dunlap. “I’m fortunate to have learned from incredible mentors, and to get to work with people who are genuinely interested in student success.

I appreciate the opportunity to get to do what I love and am honored to be included in this group of incredible teachers.”

“Dr. Dunlap is one of the greatest teachers I have ever been exposed to in my college career,” said a former student and current mentee of Dunlap. “She knows all of her students by name, and you can tell she truly cares about them … she stimulates enthusiasm for learning in her students. You cannot help but feel motivated after attending one of her lectures.”

“Thank you, Dr. Dunlap, for all you do to promote student-centered learning,” said Patrick Stover, Ph.D., vice chancellor of Texas A&M AgriLife, dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and director of Texas A&M AgriLife Research. “Having such effective educators among our faculty will generate great leaders for the future of agriculture and science.”

Recipients of this award will receive a $5,000 cash stipend, generously gifted by the Marie M. and James H. Galloway Foundation, and will hold this award title for life.
