Randel receives Purdue lifetime distinguished alumni award

Dr. Ron Randel

WEST LAFAYETTE – Dr. Ron Randel, a professor of physiology of reproduction, Texas A&M AgriLife Research senior faculty fellow and regents fellow in the Department of Animal Science, is a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni – Lifetime Career Award from the Department of Animal Sciences at Purdue University.

The award was presented during the 2015 Animal Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award Presentation on Oct. 21 in West Lafayette, Ind.

Randel earned a bachelor’s in animal science from Washington State University in 1965. He began his graduate training in September 1965 under the guidance of Dr. R.E. Erb in animal physiology in the Department of Animal Sciences at Purdue University. He completed his doctorate in January 1971.

After graduate school, Randel worked as a visiting scientist at the U.S. Range Livestock Experiment Station at Miles City before accepting the position of research physiologist in the Agricultural Research Service located at the U.S. Range Livestock Experiment Station in 1972. In 1974, Randel became an associate professor at the Texas A&M University Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Overton. He was promoted to professor in 1978; professor, faculty fellow and regents fellow in 1999; and to professor, senior faculty fellow and regents fellow in 2005.

Randel’s research has focused on reproductive physiology of tropically adapted cattle, the nutrition/reproduction interaction and currently on temperament and stress responsiveness of beef cattle.

Randel has received numerous awards from universities and organizations. He is widely published in scientific journals and has mentored 32 doctoral candidates and 47 master students as well as numerous international scholars in his laboratory.
