Paschal assists with and develops beef cattle educational and applied research actives in a 37 county region of South Texas. His interests include animal breeding and genetics (including molecular genetics), public policy issues affecting animal agriculture and integrated resource management.
In addition to his regional programing responsibilities, he is responsible for conducting the TAMU Ranch to Rail - South Program, a steer feed out program designed to aid consignors in evaluating the performance and profitability of their cattle in the feedyard and in the processing plant. He works closely with the Jim Well County Beef Cattle Improvement Association Bull Gain Test and the Rio Grande Valley Beef Improvement Association Bull Gain and Heifer Development Program. He has applied research in the development of carcass merit EPDs for the Brahman breed and in the use of ultrasound EPDs for carcass merit.
He has been a collaborator in the Comprehensive Ranch Management for Profit (CRMP): A South Texas Integrated Resource Management Program, the South Texas Spanish Goat Project, and the Beef Partners in Extension Program (Beef PEP).
Dr. Paschal has received numerous awards for his Extension work from Texas Cooperative Extension Service and beef cattle organizations including the American Brahman Breeders Association Brahman Friend of the Year Award (2003). He has traveled extensively in Central and South America and Australia. He is an internationally recognized beef cattle judge.
