Dr. Rick Machen is professor and animal and natural resource management Extension specialist stationed at the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Uvalde, Texas. Machen is also a member of the animal nutrition section in the Department of Animal Science. He received his bachelor’s degree from Angelo State University and his master’s and doctorate from Texas A&M University.

Machen coordinates Extension educational activities related to natural resource management and livestock production for the Texas Hill Country and Southwest Texas. He works closely with county Extension agents and tax appraisal districts to educate and inform small acreage, novice and absentee landowners on the merits of natural resource stewardship. Teaching methods include workshops, online learning opportunities, web-available publications and site visits.
Through multi-county, regional and statewide venues like the Luling Foundation Field Days, Texas A&M Beef Cattle Short Course and the San Antonio International Farm and Ranch Show, Machen interacts with beef, lamb and goat production professionals to improve sustainability while preserving the stability and productivity of the natural resources.

He maintains an active involvement in youth education and development by assisting with several county livestock shows and the San Antonio Livestock Exposition.
