Guoyao Wu is a Distinguished Professor, University Faculty Fellow, and AgriLife Research Senior Faculty Fellow in the Department of Animal Science. He also holds appointments with the Graduate Faculty of Nutrition, the Departments of Systems Biology and Translational Medicine and Veterinary Integrative Biosciences.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in animal science from South China Agricultural University in Guangzhou, a master’s degree in animal nutrition from Beijing Agricultural University, and a master’s degree and doctorate in animal biochemistry from the University of Alberta in Canada. He received postdoctoral training in biochemistry and nutrition at McGill University Medical School in Montreal, Canada, and at the Memorial University of Newfoundland Medical School in St. John’s, Canada.

Dr. Wu teaches graduate courses in protein metabolism and nutritional biochemistry. He conducts research in protein and amino acid metabolism at molecular, cellular, and whole body levels . The animal models used in his research include cattle, chicks, pigs, rats, and sheep.

Dr. Wu has received several prestigious awards from China, Canada, and the United States. The awards include: Nonruminant Nutrition Research Award from American Society of Animal Science (2004); Outstanding Overseas Scholar Award from The Chinese Academy of Sciences (2005); Outstanding Overseas Young Investigator Award from National Natural Science Foundation of China (2006); Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Team Research (2006) and Individual Research (2009) from The Texas A&M University System; Changjiang Scholar Award from The Ministry of Education, P.R. China (2008); Distinguished Research Achievement Award from Texas A&M University (2008); Chutian Scholar Award from The Department of Education, Hubei Province, P.R. China (2008); Texas AgriLife Senior Research Fellow from The Texas A&M University System Agriculture Program (2009); Dingying Scholar, South China Agricultural University, China (2009); FASS-AFIA New Frontiers in Animal Nutrition Research Award from Federation of Animal Science Societies and American Feed Industry Association (2009); the Thousand-People-Talent Award, The Central Government of China (2010); and The Samburu Collaboration Award from The International Association of Giraffe Care Professionals (2010). He received a National Scholarship for Graduate Studies Abroad from China, a Dissertation Fellowship and the Andrew Stewart Graduate Prize from the University of Alberta, a Diabetes Canada Fellowship, a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Medical Research Council of Canada, and an Established Investigator Award from the American Heart Association.

Professional memberships include the American Society of Animal Science, the American Society for Nutritional Sciences, Society for Study of Reproduction, American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, and American Heart Association. Dr. Wu currently serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry. He is an editor of “Amino Acids” and “Frontiers in Bioscience.”
