Youth sheep and goat projects are gaining popularity in youth livestock shows across the nation. In the past year over 9,000 youngsters raised and exhibited sheep and goat projects in Texas.

Raising a sheep or goat project takes months of proper training, feeding, and management, but this work helps develop youngsters into the fine citizens of tomorrow. Lambs can be purchased at auctions or private treaty through breeders. Many of these sales are held during late spring and summer. Show rules, guidelines, and information can be obtained from your county extension agent or ag teacher. Show dates are extremely important, because they determine the age and weight requirments for the show.

There are several prospect lamb shows in addition to the major stock shows in Texas. Sheep projects can be shown at any level from your county fair to national competitions.
